A Musician’s Plight
The background to A Musician’s Plight
This song was written because I couldn't get an event out of my head. On 06/10/20 in the UK, 400 musicians descended on Parliament Square in Westminster, and played 20% of Holst's Mars, followed by a 1-minute silence, to represent the latest plans the government had for supporting musicians - just 20% of previous income despite shutting pretty much every venue - and highlight how life would feel without music. I was so proud of my friends/colleagues that participated, but numbers were strictly limited due to social distancing considerations – so I wrote this song to “do my bit”, and shared a video of it a few days later to help highlight the situation.
During 2021, I continued to learn about home-recording, and re-recorded the song, adding a viola line, played by my daughter, Laura Moisey-Gray. The song was officially released (my first home-recorded release) in October 2021 – it felt fitting that this was a year on, to commemorate where we had been then.

And despite what they say in this present debacle
Professional musicians don’t shirk
We practised for years before earning a crust
And yes, it is true, we have fun
Do not let our lifelong work crumble to dust
In a government-led hit-and-run
Oh, what a musician’s plight
Denying our culture’s a huge oversight
Let us into your heart
Allow us to bring you our art
We’re asking right now for spaces to play in
That are safe for us to entertain
Please come and enjoy, but don’t resent payin’
Us. Music is everyone’s gain
We cannot cease practising - this is our life
Our passion shines through ev’ry score
Our goals are demanding and cause us some strife
The prize comes with ev’ry encore
Oh, what a musician’s plight
Our culture enhances delight and insight

We’ve been told to retrain – isn’t that what we’re doing?
