Drunk in Charge
The background to Drunk in Charge

Strangely enough, the title line of this song was the first inspiration for the show, but one of the last songs to actually be written.  Don’t be horrified - the title does not refer to the mother/parent, but to the way babies can look when they’re learning to walk (falling over, barely staying upright, lurching around etc.) … as if they are drunk in charge of their own bodies.  In rehearsal, we decided to change the original, a simple tune in a very standard 4 beats in a bar, to 5 beats, giving a literal off-beat feel to the song to add to the “drunk” effect.
Drunk in Charge - the lyrics

I’m only one
I’ve just begun
I have to share with my playmates
I want that toy
Off that boy
Drunk in charge. I’m a baby

I’m nearly two
Older than you
I’m learning how to tantrum
I’ll strut my stuff
In the buff
I’ll scream and scream if I want to

Crawling’s fun
Where’s it gone?
I didn’t see where he put it
Where’s my train
Gone down the drain
Drunk in charge. I’m a baby

Messy play
I’d paint all day
But Mummy never lets me
Felt tip pens
All on my friends
I wonder why they all hate me

I can talk
And use a fork
I’m having such a good time
Eyes like a hawk
I’m learning to walk
Drunk in charge. I’m a baby

Throwing’s great
Straight at my mate
I’ll soon find out how to hit her
I’ll pinch and squeeze
She’s on her knees
--- what did I do?

Are you my friend?
Does this toy mend?   You broke it!
We’re having such a good time
They want us to share
What do we care?
Drunk in charge.
I’m a baby
She broke it!
