The background to Happy Holidays
When is the best time to write a song? When you're travelling on a ship overnight and everyone else is asleep! Well, maybe that's not the ideal time but I can never sleep sitting upright, or at least not for long, so I was quite chuffed to be able to use the time to write Happy Holidays.
This was back in 2019 before the world changed, and on possibly our last proper family holiday, with both my children. (My daughter has now just completed her 3rd year at music college.) I was determined we should go abroad as the big topic of debate at the time was Brexit, and I was worried that travelling to Europe might be significantly harder in 2020. Ha - who knew?!
Anyway, I was feeling determinedly optimistic onboard the ship, looking forward to (and hoping for!) a lovely holiday, with everyone getting on well and enjoying themselves. In the event it was one of our best ever. We went to Benodet in Brittany, France, staying in a chalet on a great campsite where we played lots of table-tennis and tennis and swam. And also, of course, explored the area, enjoying the beach, the crepes, the shops etc. It was exactly what I'd hoped.
